Lisvane stands on the sheltered western outskirts of Scarborough. Set amidst extensive grounds, its buildings are an attractive blend of Jacobean and very modern. It is a well resourced school, not least by a full-time staff of 10 fully qualified teachers and by a highly experienced pastoral team.
The curriculum is broad, combining the best of what is old and new. Whilst proper account is taken of the demands of the National Curriculum, subjects taught and methods employed reflect Lisvane's independence. Hence, for example, French is taught from the age of 6. Music has its own Director with visiting staff giving individual instrumental tuition. Help is given to children experiencing some learning difficulty and Lisvane enjoys the services of a member of staff with training in the teaching of Special Educational Needs.
Specialist teachers backed by specialised facilities allow children of wide abilities to maximise their potential. Almost all children enter the senior school of Scarborough College at 11+. Through close liaison with the senior school, work in all subjects has been adapted to embrace the requirements of the National Curriculum and of GCSE.
The school's facilities are excellent. Development has added two new class-room blocks and a new changing room. In 1989, a new building to house music, science and technology was opened. The grounds contain playing fields, hard tennis courts, netball courts, a 20 metre swimming pool covered and heated for year-round use, and a fully equipped gymnasium.
During the winter terms, girls play netball and hockey whilst boys play soccer and rugby. During the summer, cricket is the main game for boys, rounders for girls. Tennis and athletics are practised by all children. Swimming is taught throughout the year. There is a full fixture list with other schools for all games.
As to fees, there are no compulsory extras and fees include lunches. There is a 10% reduction in Tuition Fee for younger brothers and sisters, including those with an elder sibling at the senior school.
